Trail running simply implies to running on trails. It is not the same as cross-country running, as instead of gravel roads and tracks, the running generally takes place on smaller forest trails. As per Steven Rindner, the trail running terrain may also include rocks, stones, ditches, streams, and tree roots, which makes the activity more challenging and exciting. Like typical road running, trail running is also an endurance sport. However, in addition to fitness, trail running can also improve agility and balance.

Steven Rindner Sheds Light On a Few Trails Running Preparation Tips

Even though trail running is largely about having fun and enjoying the moment, maintaining a low-key approach does not mean that the runners should not prepare at all. Trail running is a simple and fun way to enjoy and explore nature. However, here are a few tips one must follow while heading out to a trail adventure.

    • Pick a trail in a familiar area: For people new to trail running, it is better to stick to an area they are familiar with. Newbie trail runners should try to choose a well-marked trail and bring an offline map with them on the run. Sticking to well-marked trails is important, unless one has a very good knowledge of the area.  One must make sure that they know exactly where they are going, and can find their way back.
    • Bring extra water and snacks: No pre-run nutrition as such would be necessary before going on a trail run. One can simply have the food they normally opt for before going on a run. However, it is important to bring enough food and water to cover the run. It is better to pack a lot of calories in compact sizes, like energy bars, gels, and chews. One must also check if there is water in wells along the way on their trail route or if the water in streams is drinkable. It is important to carry extra water and snacks; in case a run takes longer than planned.
    • Be realistic about the fitness level: Prior to heading out into the trails, one must assess their running experience and fitness level in a realistic manner. Running in extreme and exposed environments might require a certain level of experience and specific fitness, depending on where one plans to run.  Anyone can go on a run for a couple of hours on a well-marked trail in a recreational area. However, to climb mountains, one has to be extremely fit.

As Steven Rindner mentions, in case one plans to run in a hilly area, they must know that doing so would be way harder than running on a flat road. However, it is vital to understand that the beauty of trail running lies in enjoying the experience. So instead of focusing on the speed and pace, runners must take it easy and enjoy their surroundings. Soft trails and hills would be easier on the joints than hammering the tarmac; however, one would still find their heart rate climbing.
